3/4" BSP tap adapter in the UAE (and the Type G plug your hub needs)

“Will it fit my tap?” is the question we get most. UAE outdoor taps are 3/4" BSP and the indoor hub needs a Type G plug — here is how to be certain before you buy, and how to avoid the GHT/BSP thread mix-up that causes leaks and returns.

The most common reason a cheap online timer gets returned is not the electronics — it is the thread. Getting a 3/4" BSP tap adapter question wrong in the UAE means a fitting that cross-threads, weeps at the joint, or simply will not seat. It is worth two minutes to get right, because the fix is almost always “buy the correct thread”, not “buy another adapter”.

The short version: nearly every outdoor tap in the UAE is 3/4" BSP, both of our timers match it out of the box, and the only other connector you need to think about is the Type G wall plug that powers the indoor hub. Choose the right water timer and there is nothing else to buy.

Threads 101

The three threads people confuse

  • 3/4" BSP (G3/4) — the UAE standard

    The thread on almost every UAE outdoor garden tap. Both our timers screw straight onto it, hand-tight with a rubber washer. No adapter, no plumber.

  • GHT — the US garden-hose thread

    What a lot of Amazon Global, Ubuy and AliExpress timers arrive with. It looks similar but the pitch is different, so it cross-threads and weeps on a BSP tap.

  • 1/2" BSP or NPT — needs a step

    Smaller or older taps (1/2" BSP) and US pipe thread (NPT) exist too. They fit only with the right cheap reducer or adapter in between.

BSP and GHT look almost identical to the eye, which is exactly why imported timers cause so much grief. When in doubt, match the tap standard (BSP) rather than trying to force a hose-thread fitting to seal.

How to confirm your tap fits

    Find your outdoor tap

    The garden bib tap you screw a hose onto — usually on an external wall, by the driveway, or on the balcony. That is the thread the timer connects to.

    Look at the threaded outlet

    A standard UAE tap has external (male) threads on the spout, roughly 26–27 mm across the outside of the thread — that is 3/4" BSP (G3/4). Our timers have the matching female connector.

    Photograph it straight-on

    Take a clear, well-lit photo looking straight into the outlet so the threads are visible. If you have a tape measure, lay it across the thread in the shot — it removes all the guesswork.

    Fit it hand-tight with the washer

    Make sure the rubber washer is seated inside the connector, then screw the timer on by hand until snug. Firm, not forced — no tools and no plumber needed.

Don’t forget the Type G plug

The tap thread is only half the fitment story. Every smart timer kit has an indoor unit — a Wi-Fi hub or an RF gateway — that needs mains power. In the UAE that means a Type G socket: the standard 3-pin, 230V wall outlet in your home. Both our kits ship with a Type G plug, so there is no travel adapter and no US 2-pin fiddling.

Keep the two connectors straight in your head: BSP is the tap, Type G is the wall. Imported kits sometimes arrive with a US or EU plug, which then needs an adapter and rarely sits tidily behind furniture near the router.

Tap fitting questions

What thread do UAE outdoor taps use?
Almost all outdoor garden taps in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are 3/4" BSP (also written G3/4). It is the plumbing standard here, which is exactly why our timers are built with a matching 3/4" BSP connector.
What is the difference between BSP and GHT?
BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the UAE standard; GHT (Garden Hose Thread) is the US standard. They are close enough to start threading together but have a different pitch and shape, so a GHT fitting will cross-thread and leak on a BSP tap. Either buy a BSP timer, or add a proper GHT ↔ BSP adapter.
Do the Johgee and RainPoint timers need an adapter?
No. Both the Johgee 4-Zone RF and the RainPoint 2-Zone Wi-Fi have a 3/4" BSP female connector that screws straight onto a standard UAE tap, hand-tight, with no tools.
What plug do the indoor hubs use?
The UAE Type G plug — the same 3-pin, 230V socket used throughout your home. Both kits ship with a Type G plug, so there is no travel adapter to hunt for. Keep the hub within reach of a socket near your router.
My tap is 1/2 inch — will a timer still fit?
Yes, with a 1/2" → 3/4" BSP adapter between the tap and the timer. It is an inexpensive part sold in any UAE hardware shop. Send us a photo first and we will tell you exactly which adapter to grab.
